The Seathwaite graphite deposit in Borrowdale (NY 232 125) is unique in the British Isles and has very few parallels elsewhere in the world. Mining here dates back to at least the 16th century and continued intermittently until 1891. The graphite is closely associated with a dioritic intrusion into the lowest part of the Borrowdale Volcanic Group.
